Bitters Newb

I have never purchased any bitters. Not quite sure what they are. Although, more than likely I have consumed some in the drinks from our local Tiki bars. What's a good way to get initiated? Are some more potent than others?

never purchased any, but I'm sure I've had them unknowingly in my tiki drinks.
