Day 136. Smuggler’s Cove Barrel

One of my newer Tiki mugs is this little beauty I got during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I say little, but this barrel mug from Smuggler’s Cove is actually pretty large. The top pops off for convenient filling, and the lid has a small hole in it for a straw. I myself have never been to Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco, but it’s on my bucket list. Founders Martin and Rebecca Cate seem like wonderful people. They sent me a beautiful thank-you note for supporting them and their staff while they were shut down during the pandemic. Mahalo from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you for posting this. Many wonderful establishments, Tiki and otherwise, have fallen victim to the pandemic. In my own home town, a great place called Lost Lake was one notable recent casualty. We all have to pull together to support these cultural institutions any way that we can.

Agreed, Chicago Jake! The loss of Lost Lake is a sad story, as it fell to Tiki Puritanism more than anything else. I was fortunate to visit Paul McGee there during its heyday, and got a bottle of Saint James Cellar Reserve with two co-branded tasting glasses just before they closed.

Great mug. Bummer about Lost Lake - they looked amazing.

Not to hijack the thread, but Jake, is that old place Hala Kahiki still in business just west of Chicago?

Kanaloa im hijacking your hijack! Yes, Hala Kahiki is still very much in business and hosts some cool Tiki events a few times a year. I’ve never been there, but plan to go later this year.

Yes indeed, Hala Kahiki is going strong in a suburb called River Grove. I've never been there, as I like to do my drinking in the city where it's only a short cab ride home!
