Day 162. Every Pad Needs A Hi-Fi

Here’s another artist I dig in the Tiki Lounge. Derek Yaniger has a unique style that I would describe as MCM cartoonish. This artist from Georgia is ubiquitous in the Tiki and Rockabilly scenes. My first print of his, Every Pad Needs A Hi-Fi, is the perfect addition to my SHAG Tiki Room Theatre. It represents my geekish pursuit of the next advancement in audio/video technology. All in the name of escape. Cool beans, Derek Daddy-O!

My dad, who is in his nineties, still calls it a Hi-Fi, which sounds terminally quaint to me. Of course, I still call it a stereo, which is probably just as quaint by now. I have no idea what the cool kids call their music systems these days.

I remember buying each component separately, a reel to reel, a turntable, what ever you were into at the time. I have a friend who still has his system and swears it blows the new stuff away.

Audio/Video Surround Sound is one modern name. Since video has become an important component of sound these days, the A/V moniker is in vogue. And with the movie theatre inspired surround sound, the 7.1 home theatre is now the new Quadraphonic Sound. Ah, progress!
