Day 184. Panda’s Galaxy of Sound Mobile

A few years ago I wrote my dissertation on Panda’s Galaxy of Sound. Actually, it was just a blog post. In it, I described the five genres of Tiki Music: Exotica, Lounge, Surf, Polynesian, and Space-Age Bachelor Pad. For this post, I created a visual representation of this galaxy, which looked like an atomic symbol with one colored atom/planet for each of the music styles. During the pandemic, I decided to bring this symbol to life, using coat hangers and styrofoam balls. This mobile now hangs proudly above a special display rack I bought for CDs I own of this music.

I like your five pillars of Tiki music. I always kind of thought of space-age bachelor pad music as the same genre as exotica, but now that I've given it some thought, they are really kind of opposite: one is primitive in spirit, and the other is futuristic. Both appeal to the tiki in me, though.

Chicago Jake exactly! Think of Esquivel compared to Les Baxter, or Compustible Edison vs. Martin Denny, and you get the idea.
