Another popular medium for Tiki art is music album covers. Again, SHAG has been in the forefront of this, but there are others. I was pleased to discover that Mookie Sato worked with his countrymen, the Sweet Hollywaiians, to illustrate their album Ticklin’ The Strings. I had heard this band’s music and was intrigued by the thought of a Japanese group playing Jango Reinhardt-style jazz. When I saw this album cover, it looked familiar to me, so I had to grab it. Sure enough: Mookie strikes again! I’m now up to two shirts, a Tiki mug, a print, two pins, three pillow cases, a book, stickers, and a CD cover, all by the man from Kyoto. Domo arigato, Mr. Sato!
