Day 83. Beachbum Berry’s Sippin’ Safari

Jeff “Beachbum” Berry is the king of Tiki drink knowledge. I previously highlighted his book, Potions of The Caribbean, as one of the most important works in the Tiki canon. His latest book, Sippin’ Safari, is actually the 10th anniversary re-release of one of his earliest books. Here, The Bum features many of the original bartenders he researched, their stories, and their cocktail creations. He also includes some new drink recipes and a commentary on the Tiki revival since the original book was published. Mahalo, Beachbum Berry, for sharing your hard work with the ohana. Okole maluna!

Folks coming to Sippin' Safari or Potions after mixing up recipes from his Grog Log or Intoxica! may be in for a bit of a shock. These two aren't recipe books like his earlier works. They're actually in-depth history books that happen to include a bunch of cocktail recipes. That may be a subtle difference to some, but for me it's a night-and-day difference. Sippin' and Potions are so good, they codify and contextualize so much of tiki and cocktail history in a way that not even Sven's books do. They're quite an accomplishment and I recommend them with zero reservations.

Well said, I couldn’t agree more! I have both of The Bum’s books you mentioned and prefer them as well. The only book that comes close is Smuggler’s Cove by Martin and Rebecca Cate, imho.

Smuggler's Cove is the book I always recommend to newcomers to tiki. It offers the widest, most accessible overview to all the various elements of tiki culture, rum and cocktails. Next would be Beachbum Berry Remixed, because that's a crazy-exhaustive collection of recipes. There's literally a dozen other books worthy of consideration after that, but those are my starting 1-2 punch!
