Though Les Baxter is the progenitor of Exotica music, Martin Denny is the man who gave this genre its name. His 1957 album, titled Exotica, featured a stripped-down version of Baxter’s tune Quiet Village. Denny refined his musical style to include vibes, percussion, and man-made bird calls, a sound most closely associated with this music today. The CD I listen too bundles this first album with Exotica Volume II, released in 1958. That’s a lot of musical escape on one disc!
