I’ve been watching a lot of PBS shows during Asian American Native Hawai’ian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) month. That acronym’s a mouthful! I’m reminded of another acronym, which was created as a definition of the word ALOHA. In the Hawai’ian language, aloha is actually derived from two words: Alo, meaning ‘presence,’ and Ha, meaning ‘breath.’ Therefore, aloha translates to ‘presence of breath’ or ‘breath of life.’ In 1970, Aunty Pilahi Paki actually defined the Spirit of Aloha by using the word as an acronym to list 5 Hawai’ian values. I liked this so much that I decided to frame it and hang it on the wall in my Tiki Lounge. Aloha!
