Hi

kanaloa

Well-known member
Hello. Years ago I was a regular reader and rare poster on the big, recently deceased tiki-related forum. Drifted away from most online things for a few years due to work and school, and finding the old place gone, was happy to find this place. In the process of rebuilding my back yard bar since my first one suffered an accident, and needed to find a place to chat about ideas, etc. Glad I found you.

Yay! More Tiki-o-philes! I noticed it's not just Tiki forums that are disappearing or being overhauled lately ... I belong to a Halloween forum also, and it sold ownership and restructured ... it lost it's "homemade" vibe. A lot of professionals and advertisers now. I don't think I'll stick around much longer.

I look forward to seeing any progress on the new bar!

Yes, the internet forum world has definitely seen some changes. A bunch of hobbyist or niche sites have been bought up by the same content management company, from Canada I think. They all were rebuilt with a similar look and feel, and probably 75 - 85% of them died activity-wise after the buy-outs, redesigns, and management/mod changes. As somebody who never had any interest in facebook, reddit, instagram, or any other social media that leaves me in a bind. Again, glad I found this place.

As for the new bar, it will be underwhelming compared to many other home bars. It's for our lanai area, much more compact than my old one, for a few reasons which I guess I'll explain when I post a built write-up. It's also an exercise in taking an off-the rack bar and converting it. So far, I'm happy with how it's turning out.

Welcome, I tried a spin with the loyal order of the Moai, but I think their size, and rules make being a interactive member difficult at times. Thats basically why I landed here, its more like a tiki bar, small, intimate, and filled with interesting characters. lol.
I think the atmosphere, and vibe, will be, much to your liking, and a better group of members, you could not find.
Enjoy your stay, and Aloha.

Welcome to the forum kanaloa!

I also hope to see some progress pics of your bar, I love watching how these things evolve. I changed direction more than once after getting some ideas from other Tiki bar builders. The lesson I learned is create what makes you happy. At the end of the day, it's you and your friends that will be enjoying the space!

Mahalo!

-sorry I don't mean to go off topic, but yes, I belong to both of those Halloween forums also. They tanked after being purchased and taken over. Sad...
