I'm brand new to Tiki Forum and the whole tiki social circle in general. I received the Smugglers Cove book last Christmas from one of my sons and since then, I'm all in
I plan to build a tiki bar in the basement of our new home in western Michigan starting summer of 2025.
My wife and I have been to 10 tiki bars in 6 months. I'm a newbie so I tried to group them and provide some personal thoughts.
EPIC & mind blowing!! Max's has it all. Not sure if we're allowed to rank professionals but it's my favorite

3 D's - Great entry Disguise, Decor & Drinks

Tiki Tatsu-Ya - Austin, TX
Three Dot And A Dash - Chicago
Love all the carvings, lamps, masks, etc. and conversations with the bar owner and staff
Foundation - Milwaukee
(Don Nelson had great stories and insights into tiki culture over the years (note - we also stayed at Don's Airbnb 2BR apartment above the bar...you gotta do it)
The Inferno Room - Indianapolis
(Chris Coy was gracious with his time and took me on a personal tour around the bar)

Lola's Pizza & Tiki Bar - Arlington Heights, IL
(By far the biggest surprise. Surprising amount of tiki lamps and wonderful decor. Didn't see this coming. Close enough to ORD if your flight gets canceled)

Those are all excellent Tiki bars! The Smugglers Cove book was an awesome gift, it is one of the top 5 out there in my opinion.
Glad to hear you will be building your own Tiki bar. Take a look at the home Tiki bar section on this site, there's some good pictures so you can get a few ideas.
Welcome to the madness! You will find yourself seeking out like minded folks, it's a great adventure! Be sure you let your significant other know that when travelling you will be making unscheduled stops to the local Tiki bars. lol!
