Well, the contractors are out of the way, and now, the rest of this journey, is ours to complete. We are down to 3 rooms, and our latest project to wrap up, is a drastic makeover to the room that opens out onto the deck outside, and the screen room in the back. Now drenched in palm matting, bamboo poles, and 300 ft. of rope, The Hemmingway Room, gives off an old school, Key West/Havana vibe, centered around a (shhhhh, dont tell anyone) Mexican Equipale mini bar. It features a tiki water fountain display, Frankl furniture, and art work by N Jonas Englund, and Jeff Granito.
We started by adding lots of natural light. We replaced the French doors at the back of the room, that open into the screen room, added 2 windows in the corner, and then another patio door on the west wall, that opens out onto the deck. We then installed a vinyl plank floor, that gives it the look of an old beach shack.
We then trimmed out everything in the room, with burnt wood molding. The wood is the cheapest knot filled,1x4s and 1x6s you can buy at home depot. They have NOT been stained. A quick burn with a torch, some light sanding, add a spray of matte clear coat, and it adds a dramatic, and stunning accent to the room, at a rock bottom cost.
Wanting to have the appearance of a hut, or shack, (but without the hassle of hanging matting from the ceiling) we painted the ceiling, and the walls, a foot down, with a thatch colored paint, then added a burnt, 1x6 rail, around the room, to sperate it from the rest of the wall. The remainder of the walls were given a rough coat of paint, as back round, to fill in the small spaces and openings on the Bac Bac matting. We replaced that nasty old ceiling fan too.
