After seeing some awesome builds, I decided to document my journey.

I decided from the beginning that I wanted the look of an unassuming garden shed to fit into my backyard theming. I had quite a bit of space to work with. The city I live in allows up to a 200 square foot structure without needing a permit. I really was trying to avoid any permitting as it would add costs and delays to the project.

Here is the space I started with, landscape rock moved so I could gauge the footprint I was after. From left to right, 2 orange trees, lemon tree, fig tree. (one orange tree has since been replaced with a lime tree)

Next up I started looking at pre-built sheds. I found a reasonable one, 12x16. (no permit required) This company allows you to virtually create your shed with door placement, window placement etc.

I made sure I was good with the footprint, so I marked out the dimensions on the ground.

Stay tuned, next post I'll show you what I envisioned for the floor plan, and what interior items I started purchasing.

Mahalo for reading!
That’s a beautiful backyard. I love the palm trees in the background. I can deduce that you’re not in North Dakota. Where be your digs?

Here's a quick video of the completed Lava Lounge.

Absolutely GORGEOUS! What a great job! I was limited as to what I could do with my home tiki lounge (Paradise Cove) because it's in a rented apartment. But after a year and a half of painstaking work the result was worth it and belies the fact that it is, of necessity, a "temporary" construction. Still, the illusion is pretty convincing, especially when all the special lighting is in play. But, because it's also a bedroom/office, there is no room for a bar!

I've added a few small(ish) items to the Lava Lounge over the last few months. One in particular I've wanted for a long time, -I never could find one I liked. Here it is, a "jade tile". This one is from the online store at Trader Vics. It's a lot bigger than I envisioned, I had originally wanted to hang it off the wall in some kind of bamboo frame. It's much thicker than I thought the original tiles were, this one is 1.5 inches thick! It has some weight to it also. So I don't think I can hang it and still make it look good. I might just surround it in a wood frame and use it as a conversation piece on the table. Stay tuned to see where I go with this.
