A Moment of Tiki

Hey gang, Episode 39 of my YouTube show, A Moment of Tiki, is now live on the interwebz. This time out, I put the non-alcoholic spirit "Ritual Rum Alternative" though its paces to to see if it really is a legit alternative. I have to warn you, though, that if you're looking for the professionalism of Spike's Breezeway Cocktail Hour or the sophisticated philosophical musings of Tiki Bar TV, you're likely to be disappointed. This is strictly amateur hour!

Another good episode. Non-alcoholic rum? And whiskey? I had no idea such a thing existed.

Maybe useful for diabetic-friendly mocktails?
There are quite a few alcohol-free "spirits" on the market now. Most use some type of distillation to extract flavors. Seedlip really blazed the trail here a while back with their offerings. although their products aren't a 1:1 sub for any specific spirit.

Note that most of these contain some degree of sugar for mouthfeel and flavor (as with rum, the amount varies) so you'd have to take that into account for any diabetic-friendly drinks.

I was thinking about getting the non-alcoholic rum. Glad to watch the video.
As you saw in the video, it worked well as a rum sub in a daiquiri, although it really didn't taste like a daiquiri in the end. I also tried it as a sub for vermouth in a rum martini. Alas, that didn't work as well. A good use for it might be using it as a split base in tiki cocktails when you want to dial back, but not eliminate, the booze for whatever reason.

Over the past year I've been invited to be a guest on a couple of podcasts and hold forth on all manner of tiki-related subjects.

A few months back David Phantomatic visited the Lagoon to record this episode of Marooned: A Texas Tiki Podcast

Then last summer, Eric Kozlik invited me to be a guest on Modern Bar Cart.

Both times out I said some things that made me sound like a dolt and a few things that made me sound like an insightful sage, but most of it falls somewhere in the middle. Enjoy, or not, as you choose.

This is the one that started it all. It's pretty crude to look back on, with crummy sound and shot on a cell phone, but you have to start somewhere. I've learned a lot since I filmed this, so I really need to revisit the whole bamboo thing soon. If you're in California or Florida where bamboo mites are a concern, flame-treating fresh harvested bamboo is not sufficient to kill mites or their eggs, so beware.

What's this? A mid-month episode drop? Why, yes it is! Continue celebrating Dry July with my recipe for the Tambulu Fizz, or if you want something more applicable to traditional tiki libations, I include a recipe for tamarind syrup. Why isn't tamarind used more often in tiki cocktails? It's not much more difficult to prep than other esoteric tiki ingredients and offers a distinct, tropical flavor...
