Tonight’s Drink …

As the weather warms, I'm preparing for Spring and early Summer parties. Been playing around with Canton ginger liqueur and trying to come up with a drink that brings the smells and flavors of an old school Honolulu crack seed store. Specifically this one in Kaimuki, which was a regular haunt and appears to have remained unchanged all these years.

4 oz Shaka mango hibiscus tea
1.5 oz ginger liqueur
A squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Shake with crushed ice.
Place 2-3 seedless li hing muis in a glass (I use a mai tai glass). Pour the above unstrained into the glass and add ice to fill.

Still playing with this recipe and will experiment with it again tonight. It's mild and delicious in its current form, but needs more "wow" factor flavor and garnish wise before I start serving it to friends. Also given how mild the Canton is, I'm thinking it may benefit from a few splashes of Goslings or Blenheim ginger ale.

A few days late, but I opened my minimalist bar for the season, so here's a peak at what I keep on the bottom two shelves which kept me and our guests deep in Mai Tais, Lapu Lapus, and shaken Pina Coladas all night. And even one guest's request for a whiskey sour - fortunately, I had David Chan's Honolulu Sour recipe on my crib sheet. Me? I drank all of the above. And fortunately I'm still standing today.

Slightly off topic, but did Chick-fil-A change their ice recently, or does it vary by restaurant? I swear I used to get crumbly pebble ice, but the stuff they sold us this weekend was little pucks. Which screwed up my drink dilution a bit.

Guess where I've been drinking all week?

Tonight's drink was a Hippopotomai-tai. I took it easy today. Because of the previous four days' consumption:

Hippopotomai-tai - I've had 1-2 each day for mental health purposes
Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum
Krakatoa Punch
Dark & Tropical Stormy
Spice Island
Tahitian Torch

My drinking has not been limited to Trader Sam's. Despite my intent to absolutely hate the Enchanted Rose (the old Mizener's which it replaced was my favorite low key, mid afternoon escape), I really like the main space after dark and their solid cocktail menu. Oga's Cantina in Star Wars land is kind of just okay, but the drinks are good. If you get the right crowd, I can see it being really fun, especially if they kick out kids at night.

I feel the need to post my tiki bar version of the Confiteor.

I didn't feel like driving to get fresh limes. The bottle of Nellie's was really old and pretty foul, so I went with an even worse option, ReaLime. I was too lazy to dig out my shaker - and since I'm skipping gym night today because (1) it's Leg Day and (2) I'm drinking - I used my blender bottle conveniently sitting on the kitchen counter instead.

It's not the worst Mai Tai I've ever had. Not the best. The ReaLime seems to lend a not terribly pleasant aftertaste (or has the orgeat and/or agave syrup turned?) In any case, it has got to be better than whatever the hell it is the Grand Wailea posted today to mark the occasion,

What is that, a float?

I think the off flavors will be perfectly unnoticeable by my second one of the night.

Key takeaway from 2022's National Mai Tai Day for me? I'm going to get a second Blender Bottle to keep under the bar for virgin drinks. It's not a bad shaker at all, except that some crushed ice gets stuck in the little metal spiral thingy.

Cheers, gents and ladies.
