A Moment of Tiki

So you've found that elusive piece of rattan furniture that you've coveted for your tiki space for years. There's one problem tho--it's been exposed to the elements and has extensive weathering and water damage. What to do? Repair and refinish it, of course! In this episode I take viewers on a step-by-step tour to bring vintage rattan pieces back to life!

Amazing! The color of that wood is beautiful, really nice job! I hate sanding on plywood because I sometimes go through the thin veneer. Glad to see you were able to get the old finish off without blasting through that top layer.

We need to get you a cordless screw gun. :giggle:

Looking forward to the next project!

As someone who has refinished many projects, I have to say you nailed it Jayme. Nice touch with the Rattan wraps at the end!

New year, new episode of A Moment of Tiki! Rattan swivel chairs are great additions to any tiki space but what if the chair in question is neglected and abused, rusty and rejected? If that's the case you've come to the right place! Watch this amazing restoration and never look at thrift store rattan the same!

That turned out exceptionally well! Thanks for walking us through the process. I appreciate the tips on getting rid of the rust. Never knew that.

Yes, vinegar works really well and is probably the most cost effective way to do it. The only real downside is that it will discolor metal, so if you have something shiny and chrome-like, well, it won't be after the vinegar.

Nice review Jayme! A few of those rums I had always thought of as sub-par, but maybe I should rethink that. -Only because of what friends told me, not from personal experience. I'm open to taste testing now!
If someone's going to sip their rum neat, then yeah, these wouldn't be what I'd recommend. Cruzan gets a bad rap because of all the cheap, flavored crap they put out. The Appleton and Mt. Gay selections are both entry-level offerings. El Dorado 8 isn't entry-level, but for a good sipper I'd opt for El Dorado 12 (at double the price point). That said, for someone who thinks Kraken and Sailor Jerry are "good" rums and Bacardi is prestige, then these are a low bar introduction to show them a solid range of quality rum flavors at price points not terribly higher than the crappy, sugary flavored stuff. If your friends are telling you that there are better rums available, they are 100% correct. But I know that when I started out my palate wasn't developed enough to appreciate the difference between Appleton Signature and Appleton 12. Now I can, and each has their place.
