A Moment of Tiki

Episode 73 of A Moment of Tiki may now be found on the YouTubes! This time out artist Tony Canepa drops by the Lagoon of Mystery to discuss the creative process that goes into designing original mugs, glassware, menus, swizzle sticks and other accoutrements for such tiki bars as Hidden Harbor, Inside Passage and Tiki Tatsu-Ya.

Episode 74 of A Moment of Tiki is now live on the interwebz! This time out I try my hand at carving the distinctive tiki from Trader Mort's Liquor of San Diego. There's also a chance to win a Trader Mort's tiki ornament as well.

Excellent job! I can tell your wood carving skills are getting better and better!

I've been excited to do this episode for two years, and now I can finally share it! Uncharted is one of the newest and most immersive tiki bars in the U.S. Hand-built by Jason Straughan, aka the Boozy Doodler, it is a throwback to classic tiki spaces of the past. Let me know if you think it deserves to be included in the "League of Extraordinary Tiki Bars." Episode 76 of A Moment of Tiki may now be found on the YouTubes.

Pretty amazing Tiki bar! And this is close to where you live? I'd be in there 2 times a week!

Great interview! (y)

Thanks Jayme!

Now I have a reason to visit Texas!

I liked the lighting in that bar... <wink wink>

Great job as always Jayme!

Thanks, folks. Yes, Uncharted is maybe a 10-15 minute drive from my house, depending on traffic. The beverage program was set up by Russell Theode of Houston's Lei Low, so the drinks are quality. My budget can't handle twice a week visits, but we do go every chance we get.

Episode 77 of A Moment of Tiki may now be found on the YouTubes. This is probably my single biggest undertaking thus far--installing a tiki bar ceiling. While there are many different approaches and styles for tiki ceilings, I opted for the popular combination of reed fencing and bamboo. Tackling such a build can be daunting, but it turned out to be fairly straightforward.

What diameter bamboo did you use for this project? This looked like a lot of work, but wow, it looks really amazing! The hook idea is something I will have to remember if I ever try to tackle this. That is a great idea.

Turned out great!

Thanks, Tangaroa. The bamboo culms averaged maybe 2" in diameter. A few of the shorter pieces may have been as much as 2.5" and teh narrower pieces 1.5". I harvest the bamboo from a grove of what I think is golden bamboo, planted in the 70s for erosion control. Most of the culms don't get very thick so I collected pieces over several years to get enough big culms for the ceiling (I didn't realize that's what I was collecting them for--I just figured I'd have use for them some day!).

Have you ever wondered how to hang a Chinese jade breezeway tile in your tiki space? Well, have I got a show for you! I've partnered with Stroud's Specifics for a whiz-bang tiki tile hanging demonstration. A Moment of Tiki episode 78 may now be found on YouTubes!

Excellent job! The one thing that surprised me about the tiles is how thick they are. For some reason I thought they were only about 3/4" think. They are much more than that.

Looks great! Your inside space is coming along nicely! A great space to be in when the weather outside is too hot or too cold.

BTW.... for anyone looking for the tiles: https://stroudsspecifics.com/

That project turned out great! I love the jade tiles. I'm glad there is a source to get them.

I watched this episode a few weeks ago. Good job! I need to do something like that in my home bar...
